PM Surya Ghar Last Date 2026: Deadline, Extension and Updates

"Is the subsidy ending?" is now one of the most common questions we get, usually from someone who read that it closes in March and is worried about starting too late.

The short answer is that PM Surya Ghar has a fixed end date, 31 March 2027, and that date matters less than it sounds for a household starting now. The longer answer is about which step of the process has to finish by when, and that is where people lose the subsidy.

The official PM Surya Ghar last date

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's guidelines state that the scheme has an outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is to be implemented until FY 2026-27. The financial year ends on 31 March 2027, so that is the date the scheme is funded to.

The scheme was initiated on 13 February 2024, and the subsidy rates have applied from that date. There has been no change to the end date in the notified guidelines.

Is PM Surya Ghar ending? What the extension reports say

Through 2026 there have been two separate strands of news, and it helps to keep them apart.

Reports of an extension. Industry reporting in 2026 says the Centre is considering extending the scheme by around three to four months beyond March 2027, to keep installations moving and reach more households. This is reported, not announced. Until a notification appears, plan to the March 2027 date.

Reports of a next phase. The same reporting describes the Centre preparing a next-phase rooftop solar programme, which some sites have started calling "PM Surya Ghar 2.0". No scheme by that name has been notified, and nobody can yet say what its subsidy rates or rules will be. Do not delay a decision on the assumption that a better scheme is coming.

Why the date that matters is not the one you think

Most people treat the end date as a deadline to apply. The subsidy is not paid on application. Under the guidelines it moves through these stages:

Choose a registered vendor and agree the system and price.

Vendor installs the system.

You upload the system details, documents and geo-tagged photographs.

The DISCOM physically inspects the system, signs the net metering agreement and approves it on the portal.

The e-token is activated with your subsidy amount, and you redeem it.

The subsidy is processed within 15 days of DISCOM approval.

A household that applies in February 2027 has to get through installation, inspection and approval before the scheme's funding window closes. The practical rule: if you want the subsidy, aim to have the system installed and inspected well before the end of 2026-27, not merely applied for.

The target is one crore households. At the pace reported through 2026, reaching the full target by March 2027 would need installations to keep accelerating, which is one reason an extension is being discussed.

What has changed in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu announced a state top-up in its revised budget for 2026-27, presented on 5 August 2026, and launched it on 21 September 2026. The amounts are ₹5,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹10,000 for 2 kW and ₹22,000 for 3 kW and above, on top of the central subsidy, taking the combined maximum to ₹1 lakh. ₹50 crore has been set aside.

It covers homes registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal on or after 5 August 2026. TEDA pays it directly from the portal data, with no separate application, and it is limited to the first one lakh consumers, with ₹50 crore allocated this year. What to do if you are deciding now

If you are ready, start. There is no benefit in waiting for a next phase whose terms nobody knows, and every month of delay is a month of electricity you pay for.
