The proposition

What makes solar lighting different from grid lighting

Solar street lighting is fully standalone. Each pole carries its own solar panel, battery, LED luminaire and controller, so there is no cabling back to a distribution board, no electricity meter and no monthly bill for the light it produces. It switches on at dusk and off at dawn automatically, and it continues working during a grid outage, because it was never connected to the grid.

Where the economics are strongest

Anywhere running cable would be expensive or disruptive. New layouts and developments, rural and semi-urban roads, long compound walls and perimeters, parks and open ground, campus paths, and anywhere the distance from the nearest supply point is substantial.

Cable and trenching cost rises with distance. A solar pole does not care how far it is from anything.

Below that, mobilisation, site survey and installation costs make the per-unit price unattractive for both sides, and we would rather say so upfront than quote something neither of us is happy with. If you need a small number of lights, a local supplier will serve you better than we will, and we will say so if you ask.

A gated community typically wants street lights on the internal roads, pillar lights at the entrance and along the boundary, and wall lights around the buildings. We quote the combination rather than pushing a single product across every application.

How to evaluate a solar street light

Solar street lights vary enormously in quality at similar headline wattages, and the components that determine whether a unit still works in year five are not the ones buyers usually compare. The things that matter are the LED efficacy and actual lumen output, the battery chemistry and its capacity, the ratio of panel wattage to load, the controller, the ingress protection rating, and the pole and its galvanising.

Lumens, not just watts

Wattage describes consumption, not brightness. Two 100W fittings can differ substantially in light delivered. Ask for lumen output, lumens per watt, and the light distribution pattern, which determines how far apart the poles can be.

Battery chemistry and capacity

The battery fails first and determines the product's real life. Lithium types such as LiFePO4 last considerably longer than lead acid and tolerate deeper discharge and higher temperatures, which matters a great deal in Tamil Nadu. Ask for chemistry, capacity, and the warranty in years or cycles.

Panel wattage relative to the load

An under-sized panel cannot fully recharge the battery on a shorter or cloudier day, so the unit dims or fails early in the night after a run of poor weather. The most common cause of complaints, and invisible on a specification sheet unless you look for the ratio.

Autonomy through the monsoon

How many consecutive overcast days will the unit run through? The northeast monsoon delivers exactly that scenario every year. A product designed for average conditions will underperform for weeks each year, and the buyer will hear about it.

The controller

Dusk-to-dawn switching, charge management, deep-discharge protection and any dimming or motion-sensing behaviour all live here. Dimming to a lower level in the small hours and rising on motion extends autonomy considerably.

Ingress protection

The luminaire and the electronics sit outdoors permanently through the monsoon. Ask for the IP rating on the fitting and on the battery and controller housing.

Warranty, and who honours it

Ask for the warranty term on the luminaire, the battery and the panel separately, since they differ, and establish who services the units afterwards. A warranty from a supplier with no service presence in Tamil Nadu is worth very little.

Poles and structures

GI powder-coated poles, and why the finish matters

Blues Renewables installs solar street lights on galvanised iron poles with a powder-coated finish. Galvanising protects the steel against corrosion and the powder coat adds a second protective layer, which matters throughout Tamil Nadu's humid climate and particularly along the coast, where painted mild steel poles begin to corrode within a few monsoons.

Corrosion

A pole stands outdoors for its whole life in a hot, humid, often salt-laden environment. Galvanised and powder-coated steel substantially outlasts painted mild steel, and replacing corroded poles across an installed project is expensive and disruptive.

Wind loading

A pole carrying a panel and a luminaire at height presents real wind area. Tamil Nadu's coastal districts sit in a high basic wind speed zone with a cyclone factor applied, and poles and foundations must be designed for it rather than assumed. A pole that fails in a cyclone is a safety problem, not a warranty claim.

Foundation

Pole foundations are sized against the pole height, the loading and the ground conditions at the site. Under-specified foundations are a common shortcut and a common failure.

Height and spacing

Pole height, luminaire output and distribution pattern together determine how far apart the poles can be while still meeting the required lighting level. Getting this right decides both the quality of the result and the number of poles you buy.

A note on shading

Solar street lights fail most often not because of the product but because of where they were placed. A unit under a tree canopy will not charge properly, however good it is. Tree cover is assessed at survey, and where a location cannot be avoided, it needs a different solution rather than the same unit installed hopefully.
