Solar Battery Price in India (2026): Lithium vs Tubular, 100 Ah to 200 Ah

Solar battery prices for October 2026 from published lists: tubular 100 Ah to 200 Ah, lithium per kWh, backup hours, sizing, and when to skip a battery.

A slim wall-mounted lithium battery beside a row of tall tubular batteries in a shaded utility room of a Chennai home

Luminous lists its 150 Ah tall tubular solar battery at ₹17,499. UTL lists a 5.12 kWh lithium battery at ₹79,970. One looks four times cheaper than the other, yet per unit you can actually draw out, the lithium battery can work out cheaper.

That gap between the sticker and the real cost is why solar battery price searches end in confusion. Prices online are quoted per battery, per Ah, per kWh, with or without GST, with or without an old battery traded in. The same "150 Ah" can mean 1.8 kWh or 7.2 kWh depending on voltage.

This guide gives you prices taken from manufacturer lists and dated retailer listings for October 2026, a way to compare lithium and tubular on equal terms, a sizing method for backup hours, and the case where a home on net metering needs no battery at all. It does not price full rooftop systems; our solar panel price in Chennai page does that.

Key takeaways

  • A 12 V tubular solar battery costs about ₹14,300 (100 Ah) to ₹24,800 (200 Ah) at Luminous list prices, October 2026, or about ₹9,700 to ₹9,900 per kWh for the 150 Ah and 200 Ah "L" models.
  • Lithium (LFP) costs about ₹15,600 to ₹27,000 per kWh on UTL and Loom Solar's own price lists, but you can use most of it, while a tubular battery is best kept to about half.
  • No subsidy covers the battery. PM Surya Ghar pays ₹78,000 on the solar part of a grid-connected hybrid system; the battery is full price, with 18% GST when bought on its own.
  • Back up circuits, not the house. Lights, fans, a fridge, a router and a TV for four hours need about 1.6 kWh. An AC multiplies that.
  • A net-metered home without frequent outages does not need a battery. The grid already stores your daytime surplus at no cost, and a battery adds wear cost to every unit cycled.

What a solar battery costs in 2026

Start with the two chemistries sold for home solar in India: tubular lead acid and lithium iron phosphate (LFP, also written LiFePO4).

Tubular solar battery price by Ah

Luminous publishes its solar battery prices on its own online store, which makes it the cleanest reference. These are 12 V tubular batteries rated at C10.

  • LPT 1240L - Capacity: 40 Ah, Warranty listed: 36 months, Price (incl. GST): ₹6,599, Per Ah: ₹165, Per kWh: ₹13,748

Exide does not publish a consumer price list, so we checked two dated retailer listings. The Exide Solatubular 6LMS150L (150 Ah, 60 months) was listed at ₹19,399 and ₹21,440, and the 6LMS200L (200 Ah) at ₹24,399. That puts the typical market range in October 2026 at about ₹17,500 to ₹21,500 for a branded 150 Ah solar tubular battery and ₹23,700 to ₹24,800 for 200 Ah. Exide's 6LMS models without the "L" suffix carry a 36-month warranty instead of 60, which explains much of the price spread you see online.

Two things to notice in the table. Per Ah, bigger batteries are cheaper: a 40 Ah unit costs about 40% more per Ah than a 150 Ah one. And the "H" versions cost about ₹1,100 to ₹1,600 more for an extra year of warranty.

Lithium solar battery price per kWh

Lithium batteries are sold by voltage and kWh rather than as 12 V blocks, so compare them per kWh.

  • UTL 12.8V/100AH - Voltage and capacity: 12.8 V, 100 Ah, Energy: 1.28 kWh, Price: ₹19,990, Per kWh: ₹15,617, Warranty listed: not stated on list
  • UTL 51.2V/100AH - Voltage and capacity: 51.2 V, 100 Ah, Energy: 5.12 kWh, Price: ₹79,970, Per kWh: ₹15,619, Warranty listed: 5 years (retailer listing)
  • Loom Solar CAML 12.8V - Voltage and capacity: 12.8 V, 100 Ah, Energy: 1.28 kWh, Price: ₹34,500, Per kWh: ₹26,953, Warranty listed: 3 years
  • Loom Solar CAML 25.6V - Voltage and capacity: 25.6 V, 100 Ah, Energy: 2.56 kWh, Price: ₹64,375, Per kWh: ₹25,146, Warranty listed: 3 years
  • Loom Solar CAML 51.2V rack - Voltage and capacity: 51.2 V, 100 Ah, Energy: 5.12 kWh, Price: ₹1,08,000, Per kWh: ₹21,094, Warranty listed: 5 years
  • Loom Solar CAML 51.2V wall - Voltage and capacity: 51.2 V, 200 Ah, Energy: 10.24 kWh, Price: ₹2,30,000, Per kWh: ₹22,461, Warranty listed: 5 years

So a lithium solar battery costs roughly ₹15,600 to ₹27,000 per kWh at list price in October 2026, against about ₹9,700 to ₹12,000 for tubular. A 12 V 100 Ah lithium battery costs ₹19,990 to ₹34,500, against ₹14,299 for the Luminous tubular of the same Ah. Retailer prices below these lists exist, so treat them as a ceiling for comparison, not what every dealer charges.

GST and HSN code on solar batteries

Batteries fall under HSN 8507 (8507 20 for lead acid, 8507 60 for lithium-ion). Since 22 September 2025, after the 56th GST Council meeting, all batteries under heading 8507 attract 18% GST; lead acid came down from 28%. A battery bought on its own is taxed as a battery, not at the 5% rate for solar devices. When a battery is supplied inside a turnkey system, the 70:30 split for EPC contracts applies to the whole contract, as our GST on solar power plant guide explains.

Lithium vs tubular: which costs less per usable unit?

The sticker price compares the wrong numbers. What you pay for is energy you can safely take out, again and again.

  • Usable share we design for - Tubular lead acid: about 50%, Lithium (LFP): 80% to 90%
  • Rated cycle life - Tubular lead acid: up to 1,500 cycles at 80% DoD (Luminous LPTT 12150H), Lithium (LFP): 3,500 cycles at 80% DoD (Loom 48 V); 3,000 to 6,000 typical
  • Maintenance - Tubular lead acid: top up with distilled water every 8 to 10 months (Luminous), Lithium (LFP): none; built-in battery management system
  • Weight - Tubular lead acid: 60 kg for 1.8 kWh (Luminous 150 Ah), Lithium (LFP): 57 kg for 5.12 kWh (UTL 51.2 V)
  • Ventilation - Tubular lead acid: needed; gives off gas while charging, Lithium (LFP): not needed in the same way
  • Chennai heat - Tubular lead acid: shortens life, Lithium (LFP): shortens life

Now run the numbers per usable kWh. A Luminous 150 Ah at ₹17,499 holds 1.8 kWh; at 50% usable that is 0.9 kWh, or about ₹19,400 per usable kWh. The UTL 51.2 V lithium at ₹79,970 holds 5.12 kWh; at 90% usable that is 4.6 kWh, or about ₹17,400 per usable kWh. Loom's 51.2 V rack battery works out to about ₹23,400.

So per usable unit, lithium ranges from slightly cheaper to slightly dearer than tubular, and it lasts two to four times as many cycles. Tubular wins only on the first bill, and on small 12 V setups where a single battery is all you need.

Solar battery vs normal inverter battery

A solar battery is a deep-cycle battery built to charge from panels every day and discharge every night. Indian solar tubular batteries are rated at C10, meaning the stated Ah is what the battery delivers when drained over 10 hours. A C20 rating, common on home inverter batteries, measures over 20 hours, which gives a bigger Ah figure for the same plates. Compare a C10 150 Ah only with another C10 rating.

The warranty also cares. Exide's solar warranty terms require the battery to be used only in solar applications, with a proper charge controller or inverter settings and battery-grade distilled water, and the warranty is not transferable. Connect it to panels without a charge controller and the warranty is void.

How much battery do you need for backup hours?

Size the battery from what must run during a cut, for how long. Not from the size of your house, and not from the inverter rating.

A typical Chennai home riding out a four-hour evening outage:

  • 6 LED lights at 10 W - Load: 60 W, Hours: 4, Energy: 240 Wh
  • 3 ceiling fans at 75 W - Load: 225 W, Hours: 4, Energy: 900 Wh
  • Fridge (average draw) - Load: 60 W, Hours: 4, Energy: 240 Wh
  • Wi-Fi router - Load: 10 W, Hours: 4, Energy: 40 Wh
  • TV - Load: 80 W, Hours: 2, Energy: 160 Wh
  • Total - Load: 435 W, Hours: , Energy: 1,580 Wh (about 1.6 kWh)

The wattages are typical figures; check your appliance labels. Allow about 10% for inverter losses and you need roughly 1.75 kWh out of the battery.

  • Tubular at 50% usable: about 3.5 kWh of nameplate capacity, which is two 12 V 150 Ah batteries (3.6 kWh) in a 24 V bank. At Luminous prices, about ₹35,000.
  • Lithium at 90% usable: about 2 kWh of nameplate, so a 25.6 V 100 Ah battery (2.56 kWh). At list price, ₹45,340 (UTL) to ₹64,375 (Loom).

Backup hours from one 12 V battery

At the same 435 W load, with 10% inverter losses:

  • 12 V 100 Ah - Energy: 1.2 kWh, Tubular (50% usable): about 1.2 hours, Lithium (90% usable): about 2.2 hours
  • 12 V 150 Ah - Energy: 1.8 kWh, Tubular (50% usable): about 1.9 hours, Lithium (90% usable): about 3.4 hours
  • 12 V 200 Ah - Energy: 2.4 kWh, Tubular (50% usable): about 2.5 hours, Lithium (90% usable): about 4.5 hours

Add one AC and these numbers collapse. A single air conditioner draws more than everything in the first table combined, which is why the rule that keeps a hybrid system affordable is to back up only what must run. Daytime cuts are easier: the panels carry the load and charge the battery at the same time.

For charging, the panel watts depend on battery voltage and controller type. Our post on how many solar panels charge a 200Ah battery has the sums, and MPPT vs PWM charge controllers explains why a modern 550 W panel needs MPPT on a 12 V battery.

Do you need a battery at all?

Here is the part battery sellers skip. On-grid solar runs without any battery. The grid-tied inverter converts panel DC to AC for your home and sends the surplus out through the net meter. Homes in Tamil Nadu keep net metering up to their sanctioned load, so units you export in the afternoon are credited against what you import at night. Unused credit lapses on 31 March.

In effect the grid is your battery, and it charges nothing for the service. A physical battery, by contrast, wears out with every cycle. Take the Loom 48 V rack battery: ₹99,000 for 4.8 kWh and 3,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. That is about 13,400 units over its rated life, or roughly ₹7.40 of battery wear on every unit you store, before charging losses. Stored units are also units not exported, so a hybrid system cuts your bill slightly less than an on-grid one.

The trade-off is outages. A grid-tied inverter must switch off when the grid fails, so linemen are not put at risk. Sunshine or not, your home goes dark with it. Only a hybrid inverter with a battery keeps chosen circuits alive.

A battery is worth it if you work from home and lose income when the internet drops, someone at home relies on medical equipment, or your area has frequent or long cuts.

Skip the battery if supply is reliable and cuts are short, payback is your main goal, or the budget is tight. That money does more in a good inverter, structure and protection gear.

Not sure yet? Install a hybrid-capable inverter now and add the battery later. A standard grid-tied inverter would have to be replaced to add storage, so this decision belongs at installation.

Already have an inverter battery? Many Chennai homes do. Keeping it as it is for backup, with separate on-grid solar for the bill, is often the cheapest route. When the old inverter or battery is near the end of its life, replacing it with a hybrid inverter is the cleaner fix.

Battery backup is allowed on your side of the meter in Tamil Nadu, with prior intimation to the distribution company; our note on TANGEDCO hybrid inverter rules covers the details.

Hybrid solar system price: battery plus solar

Total cost = solar system + extra for a hybrid inverter + battery + rewiring backup circuits to a separate board.

For the solar part, a 3 kW system in Chennai costs about ₹2,10,000 and a 5 kW system about ₹3,20,000 before subsidy. Because a hybrid system stays grid-connected, the solar part still earns the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above, plus the Tamil Nadu top-up of ₹22,000 for eligible homes registered from 5 August 2026. The battery gets neither. See the PM Surya Ghar subsidy guide for conditions, and solar inverter price for what a hybrid inverter adds over a standard one.

When you compare quotes, ask for the battery as a separate line, divide its price by usable kWh (not nameplate), check whether installation, backup board and GST are included, and get the warranty terms in writing. If an installer cannot tell you what depth of discharge they sized for, treat that as a warning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a 150Ah solar battery?

A branded 12 V 150 Ah solar tubular battery costs about ₹17,500 to ₹21,500 in October 2026. Luminous lists the LPTT 12150L at ₹17,499 and the 12150H at ₹19,099; Exide's 6LMS150L was listed at ₹19,399 and ₹21,440 by two retailers.

What is the price of a 200Ah solar battery from Exide or Luminous?

Luminous lists the LPTT 12200L at ₹23,699 and the LPTT 12200H at ₹24,799. The Exide 6LMS200L was listed at ₹24,399 by a retailer in October 2026.

What is the price of a lithium ion solar battery?

On manufacturer price lists, about ₹15,600 to ₹27,000 per kWh. UTL lists a 12.8 V 100 Ah battery at ₹19,990 and a 51.2 V 100 Ah (5.12 kWh) battery at ₹79,970; Loom Solar lists 5.12 kWh models at ₹1,08,000 to ₹1,15,000.

Which is better for solar, lithium or tubular battery?

Lithium (LFP) gives far more usable energy per kWh, lasts more cycles and needs no water topping. Tubular costs less upfront and suits a single small 12 V battery. Per usable unit, the two land close on price, so lithium usually wins over the life of the system.

Can solar power work without a battery?

Yes. An on-grid system runs without a battery and exports surplus through net metering. It shuts down during a power cut for safety, so you need a hybrid inverter and battery only if you want backup.

Is there a subsidy for solar batteries?

No. PM Surya Ghar and the Tamil Nadu top-up apply to the solar part of a grid-connected system. Off-grid systems get no subsidy, and the battery in a hybrid system is always paid in full.

What is the GST rate on a solar battery?

18% under HSN 8507, for both lead acid and lithium, since 22 September 2025. Inside a turnkey solar contract, the 70:30 split applies to the whole contract instead.

How long does a solar battery last?

Luminous rates its tall tubular solar battery at up to 1,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge; Loom rates its 48 V lithium battery at 3,500 cycles. Chennai heat shortens both, so install the battery in a shaded, ventilated spot.
