Solar Panel Installation in Medavakkam
Most homes here install 3 kW to 5 kW, with payback often four to five years
Medavakkam has been built out over roughly two decades, and it shows on almost every street. A house from the early 2000s sits next to one finished last year. For solar that matters more than it sounds, because the structural assessment that suits one is meaningless for the other.

The short answer
Looking for a solar panel installation company in Medavakkam?
Medavakkam mixes independent houses with apartment blocks, so the first question on any survey here is who owns the terrace and which meter the system will feed. The marsh edge keeps humidity high, so enclosure rating and earthing quality matter more here than in drier parts of the city. We have installed across Chennai since 2020, file the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for households and the TANGEDCO net metering application ourselves, and include two years of free maintenance. Before the survey, you can check the solar panel price in Chennai for 3 kW to 10 kW systems and see how our solar panel installation in Chennai works, the same process we follow in Medavakkam.

The local picture
Two decades of building on the same street
Medavakkam’s rapid and continuous growth means building age varies dramatically within a single street rather than by neighbourhood. Older houses from the early phase of development frequently have terraces built in stages, with sections added over the years, while recent construction has uniform slabs and modern electrical infrastructure. The structural assessment therefore has to be done property by property rather than assumed from the locality.
What the survey establishes here
Slab age and condition
Including whether the terrace was built in one pour or extended in phases. Staged construction can mean varying slab thickness across the same roof, which affects where an array can be anchored.
Sanctioned load and phase
Older connections in the early-phase streets often have lower sanctioned load than the household now uses, requiring an enhancement before a system of 4 kW or more can be commissioned.
Parapet and headroom shading
More pronounced on the older self-built properties where staircase blocks were added later.
Waterproofing condition
If an older terrace already leaks, deal with it before installation. Removing an array to repair waterproofing costs considerably more than doing it first.
The low-lying factor
Parts of Medavakkam sit close to the Pallikaranai marsh
The panels are safe on the roof, but the inverter, distribution boxes and protection equipment should be mounted at a height that accounts for the area’s water logging history, and cable routing planned away from low points. It costs nothing extra when decided before installation.
Why payback lands at the faster end
Consumption here is high
Households commonly sit above the 500 unit bi-monthly threshold where Tamil Nadu’s telescopic tariff cuts the free-unit allowance and reprices consumption into higher slabs. Those are the units solar displaces first.

Solar for Medavakkam homes
Independent houses
The core market, typically 3 kW to 5 kW, though roof condition rather than consumption often sets the practical size on older properties.
Apartment blocks
Follow the association route for common-area systems at ₹18,000 per kW.
Newer gated communities
May carry architectural control rules, so check the bye-laws before committing to a design.
Older properties
Need the waterproofing and slab condition question answered before anything else.
Commercial and industrial
Solar for Medavakkam businesses
Medavakkam’s commercial base serves its residential population rather than operating independently.
Clinics and diagnostic centres
Daytime load matching generation, and equipment that makes power quality a legitimate design question.
Showrooms and retail
Along the main road. Evening-weighted trading, and roof rights first on leased premises.
Schools and coaching institutions
Strong term-time daytime match, with the vacation affecting sizing.
Small offices and service businesses
Good daytime match and commercial tariffs, so payback is typically faster than residential.
Local guide
Medavakkam rooftop solar after the Vadakkupattu lake breach
Medavakkam is a village panchayat in Chengalpattu district, about 4 km from Sholinganallur on OMR. When the Vadakkupattu lake, the Medavakkam Periya Eri, breached during Cyclone Michaung on 4 December 2023, water rose as high as five feet in low-lying streets.
Five feet of water sets the mounting height
A citizen flood audit by members of Medavakkam Rising, published in January 2024, found that the lake's breach flooded Vadakkupattu, Thiruvalluvar Street in Medavakkam and parts of Pallikaranai, with water as high as five feet in low-lying areas, over 1,000 cars damaged and losses near ₹50 crore. In those streets, anything below about 1.8 metres on a ground floor wall is at risk. Mount the inverter and distribution boxes on a first floor or terrace stair room wall, run the cable down outside in sealed conduit, and keep only the meter connection at ground level. Apartment associations should keep the common area inverter out of stilt parking.
Why the lake overflowed, and what that means for you
The same audit blamed the lack of a proper surplus weir or flood regulator on the Periya Eri, and surplus channels that once existed but are now gone, for the uncontrolled sheet flooding. The lake falls under the Lower Palar division of the Water Resources Department. Until those works are done, treat the 2023 water level as a design figure, not history. A monitoring app that alerts you when generation stops, and an AC isolator you can reach from an upper floor, let you shut the system down safely before water reaches the meter board.
Size with the Chengalpattu figure, not Chennai's
Because Medavakkam is in Chengalpattu district, the state rooftop calculator applies 1,580 units per kW a year here, about 4.3 units a day, slightly below Chennai district's 1,600. A 3 kW system makes about 4,740 units a year and a 5 kW system about 7,900. A 5 kW system costs about ₹3,20,000 before subsidy and about ₹2,20,000 after the central and state subsidies, and it needs three-phase supply, since single-phase connections are limited to 4 kW. Many houses here will need that conversion filed alongside the net metering application.
Common area systems for apartment blocks
For apartment blocks in Medavakkam's low-lying streets, a common area system qualifies for ₹18,000 per kW and typically runs lifts, pumps, corridor lights and the STP during the day. Its inverter and distribution board belong on the terrace or in a first floor services room, not in the stilt car park where lift and pump panels often sit. Associations should check that the pump room panel is above the 2023 flood mark too, because no solar system can keep a flooded motor running.
What we install
What we install in Medavakkam
The process
How installation works
Free site survey
Shade-free roof area measured across the day, structure checked, connection name and sanctioned load confirmed.
Design and itemised quotation
Sized against twelve months of consumption, with every component named.
Approvals filed
PM Surya Ghar and TANGEDCO net metering, plus load enhancement or phase conversion in parallel where needed.
Installation
One to three days for a residential system, carried out by our own team rather than subcontracted.
Inspection and commissioning
TANGEDCO inspects, the net meter goes in, the system goes live.
Subsidy tracked to your account
And two years of maintenance included from commissioning.
We check the name on your electricity connection at the survey, because a mismatch stops more applications than any technical issue. See what to keep ready.
Free, no obligation
What will it cost on your roof in Medavakkam?
Not sure if your older terrace can take it?
That is the right question. Staged construction means slab thickness can vary across the same roof, and we check before quoting rather than after.
What happens after you send your details
- We call you within one working day, and an engineer rather than a salesperson attends the site.
- The survey is free. We measure usable area and shading, check your connection and sanctioned load, and photograph the site.
- You get an itemised quotation naming every component and brand, with the subsidy or depreciation position set out.
- No obligation at any point. If solar does not make sense for your property, we will say so.
Common questions
Solar in Medavakkam, common questions
Why does building age matter so much in Medavakkam?
Because it varies house to house rather than by neighbourhood. A terrace from the early 2000s built in stages can have varying slab thickness across the same roof, which affects where an array can be anchored, while recent construction has uniform slabs and modern connections. The assessment has to be done property by property.
Does water logging affect solar in Medavakkam?
The panels do not, since they sit on the roof, but the inverter and protection equipment can. Parts of Medavakkam sit close to the Pallikaranai marsh and have a history of water logging, so that equipment should be mounted at a height accounting for it and cable routing planned away from low points. It costs nothing extra when decided beforehand.
Why is payback faster for Medavakkam homes?
Because consumption is high. Many households here sit above 500 units per bi-monthly cycle, where Tamil Nadu’s telescopic tariff cuts the free-unit allowance and reprices consumption into higher slabs. Solar displaces those expensive units first, so each generated unit is worth more than it would be for a lower-consumption household.
How long does installation take in Medavakkam?
Six to ten weeks in Medavakkam. Earthing in marshy ground needs more attention and occasionally a deeper pit, which adds a day on site but not to the overall programme, since TANGEDCO approval governs that.
Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?
Yes. Both the PM Surya Ghar claim and the TANGEDCO net metering application are ours to file and follow up. In the Medavakkam area we also check the sanctioned load early, because load enhancement filed late is the commonest cause of a delayed connection.
What is included after installation?
Two years of free maintenance from commissioning, covering panel cleaning, annual inspection of connections and structure, generation monitoring and warranty coordination with the manufacturer.
Has the risk from the Vadakkupattu lake been fixed since 2023?
Not as far as published reports show. The January 2024 citizen audit blamed a missing surplus weir or flood regulator and surplus channels that have disappeared, on a lake under the WRD's Lower Palar division. Until those works are confirmed complete, design for the 2023 level of up to five feet in the low-lying streets.
Medavakkam is outside Chennai Corporation. Does that change the subsidy or net metering?
No. PM Surya Ghar and TNPDCL net metering follow the same rules across Tamil Nadu, including the ₹22,000 state top-up for eligible homes. What changes is the generation figure: the state calculator uses the Chengalpattu district value of 1,580 units per kW a year.
