Agraharam houses: long roofs broken by courtyards

Mylapore's agraharam houses are long buildings split into a front quarter for visitors, the living quarters and a kitchen and backyard section, with open courtyards and skylights between them. On these roofs the usable area comes in separate strips rather than one rectangle. We lay the array out strip by strip and put each strip on its own inverter input, so the shadow of a neighbouring wall on one strip does not pull down the rest. Where a strip is shaded for part of the day, module level optimisers recover more than adding panels would. Skylights stay clear.

Working around the Panguni festival and the metro works

The Panguni Brahmotsavam runs for ten days in March to April, with chariot and palanquin processions around the Kapaleeshwarar temple and the largest crowds on the eighth day. Material deliveries and lifting on the temple streets should be planned for other weeks. The Thirumayilai metro interchange is also under construction at the Luz and Canal Bank Road junction, due in 2028, so routes and parking near Luz need checking before installation day. On the eighth day, the procession of the 63 Nayanmars draws the largest crowd of the year.

Keeping old rainwater paths open

Many older Mylapore houses were built with sloping roofs that send rainwater to the street and, historically, towards the temple tanks. Mounting rails must not block valleys, gutters or the drainage line of a sloped roof, and on flat terraces the array should sit clear of the outlets and downpipes. Where the house collects roof water in a sump or well, panel washing water runs there too, so clean with plain water and no detergent. Leave a clear gap under the lowest row of modules so leaves do not pile up against the outlets.

Sizing a smaller Mylapore terrace
