What is a solar wall light?

A solar wall light is a standalone fitting mounted on an exterior wall, with its own solar panel, battery and LED. It charges by day and switches on at dusk automatically, with no cabling back to a distribution board and no electricity meter. Because it is not grid-connected, it continues working during a power cut and adds nothing to the electricity bill.

The question that decides whether solar wall lights work

An integrated solar wall light has its panel fixed to the wall it is mounted on, so the panel faces whatever direction the wall faces. A south-facing wall receives good direct sun for much of the day. A north-facing wall receives very little. This single factor determines whether the fitting charges properly, and it matters far more for wall lights than for pillar lights or street lights, where the panel sits with clear sky above it.

The solution for north-facing and shaded walls

Where the wall faces the wrong way, or sits in shade from a building, a canopy or trees, the answer is a split fitting: the light stays on the wall where you need it, and the panel is mounted separately on the parapet, roof or another sunlit surface, connected by a short cable.

It costs more and takes longer to install than an integrated fitting, and it is frequently the difference between lighting that works and lighting that dims out by ten o'clock.

This is what the site visit establishes

We look at every wall the fittings will go on, note which way each faces and what shades it, and specify integrated or split accordingly.

On a compound with walls facing all four directions, expect a mix of both arrangements rather than one product everywhere. A supplier quoting one fitting for an entire compound without walking it has not thought about this.

Wall lights are usually part of a wider scheme. A gated community typically wants street lights on the internal roads, pillar lights at the entrance and along boundaries, and wall lights on building exteriors and parking areas. Quoting the combination gives a better result than picking one product for every situation.

Security

Perimeter lighting and motion activation

Perimeter wall lighting is the application where motion sensing is most worth having. A fitting that runs at a low level through the night and rises to full output when movement is detected provides both a deterrent effect and considerably better battery autonomy than one running at full output from dusk to dawn.

A light that changes when someone approaches is more noticeable than one that has been on all night.

Autonomy

Running dimmed for most of the night draws far less from the battery, so the fitting survives a longer run of cloudy days and the battery cycles less heavily, which extends its life.

Neighbours

Lower baseline output through the small hours reduces light spill into adjacent properties and windows.

Where motion sensing is a poor fit

Areas where constant illumination is expected, such as a parking bay in regular use or an entrance where people come and go through the evening. Match the profile to how the space is actually used rather than applying one setting across the site.

On solar and CCTV together

Perimeter walls are frequently where solar-powered surveillance also makes sense, since neither the lighting nor the camera needs cabling back to a supply point. If you are lighting a perimeter, it is worth deciding on cameras at the same time.

Honest limits

Exterior walls only

Solar wall lights work on exterior walls that receive sunlight. They cannot light interior corridors, internal stairwells, basements or covered parking, because the panel needs direct sun to charge and there is none indoors. Apartment associations frequently ask about solar for internal common areas, and the honest answer is that this is not what standalone solar lighting does.

For interior common areas, there is a better route

For corridors, stairwells and basement parking, the workable approach is a rooftop system on the building's common-services connection, which offsets the electricity those lights consume rather than powering them directly. That is a larger project than wall lighting, and for a housing society it carries a ₹18,000 per kW subsidy under PM Surya Ghar on the common-area capacity.

Output, honestly stated

Wall lights are compact fittings. They light a wall, an entrance, a bay or an approach. They do not illuminate an open yard or a road, which is what street lighting is for.

Shading beats product quality

A fitting under a canopy, balcony overhang or dense tree cover will not charge, whatever its specification. Either the panel goes elsewhere on a split arrangement, or that position needs a different solution.
