Solar Panel Installation in Nungambakkam

We tell you in one call whether your building’s roof is actually available to you

Nungambakkam runs on converted buildings. Offices in former bungalows, consulates in old houses, hotels alongside residences on the same street. It is one of the few parts of Chennai where the first solar question is almost always about who controls the roof rather than how big it is.

The short answer

Looking for a solar panel installation company in Nungambakkam?

Nungambakkam is commercial ground, and a business roof is priced from a load study rather than a bill amount. In the area the existing electrical installation is frequently the first thing to fix. Older boards and earthing rarely meet what a solar connection needs. We have installed across Chennai since 2020, file the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for households and the TANGEDCO net metering application ourselves, and include two years of free maintenance. Before the survey, you can check the solar panel price in Chennai for 3 kW to 10 kW systems and see how our solar panel installation in Chennai works, the same process we follow in Nungambakkam.

The local picture

Converted buildings and who owns the roof

Much of Nungambakkam’s commercial activity happens in buildings that were not built for it. Offices occupy converted bungalows, consulates and institutions use older residential properties, and a single building often houses several unrelated tenants. That makes roof rights the first question in a Nungambakkam commercial enquiry, ahead of roof area, load or budget.

The three questions, in order

Do you control the roof?

A tenant occupying two floors of a converted bungalow generally does not, and a multi-tenant building’s terrace usually belongs to the owner rather than any occupant.

Is the usable area meaningful?

Converted residential buildings have terraces designed for a household, often broken up by staircase blocks, tanks and later additions.

How long is left on the lease?

A 25-year asset on a five-year lease needs the ownership and exit position documented before installation.

Where it works well in Nungambakkam

Owner-occupied commercial buildings

Where the roof is genuinely yours.

Hotels

Which typically own their premises and have both continuous load and roof area, though evening and overnight consumption limits what solar covers.

Large independent residences

Of which Nungambakkam still has many, with generous terraces and high air conditioning load.

Landlord participation

Where the building owner invests and the benefit passes through the lease.

Converted buildings

Structural condition matters more than usual

A terrace built for a residence and now supporting commercial use may already carry loads it was not designed for, including air conditioning plant added over the years. That should be assessed before an array is anchored to it.

Residential

Solar for Nungambakkam homes

Nungambakkam retains a substantial affluent residential base alongside its commercial activity.

Large independent houses

Typically install 5 kW to 10 kW, driven by air conditioning and often an EV.

Older properties

May have staged terrace construction or sections at different levels, which shapes the array layout.

Apartment blocks

Follow the association route for common-area systems.

Systems above 4 kW need three-phase supply

So the connection is checked at the survey.

Commercial and industrial

Solar for Nungambakkam businesses

Every commercial project starts with an energy audit rather than a roof measurement, because the load profile determines the system size and the roof only constrains it.

Offices in converted buildings

Excellent daytime load match, but roof rights and structural condition come first.

Hotels

Continuous load with evening and overnight peaks, so solar covers the daytime portion including laundry, kitchen and daytime cooling.

Consulates and institutions

Daytime load, and often owner-occupied, which removes the roof rights obstacle.

Showrooms and restaurants

Evening-weighted, and usually leased.

Nungambakkam solar: old lake-bed colonies, tall trees and large homes

Much of the residential area around Valluvar Kottam stands on the old Nungambakkam tank, which was filled in completely in 1971. The Hindu noted that the housing colonies built on it still sit lower than the roads around them.

Lake-bed colonies sit below the road

The Nungambakkam tank once fed the Long Tank of Mylapore. A 2014 column in The Hindu traced its extent to roughly Tank Bund Road, Valluvar Kottam, Kodambakkam High Road and Mahalingapuram Main Road, and recorded that the Corporation turned it into a landfill on which housing colonies grew, all still lower than the roads. Rainwater runs off those roads into the plots. If your house is in the old lake area, keep the inverter and distribution boxes on the first floor or a terrace wall, run the AC cable down in sealed conduit, and raise the meter board when the net meter is fitted if it sits low.

Century-old roads, tall trees and moving shade

College Road, Haddows Road and Sterling Road appear on a 1909 map, and Sterling Road is lined with trees on both sides. Old garden plots and mature avenue trees mean shade that moves across a terrace through the day and through the year. Measure it morning and afternoon, in winter and summer, before fixing the array size. Shaded sections go on their own string or get optimisers, so one shaded panel does not drag down the rest. An elevated structure clears parapets and water tanks but not a tall tree, and the array should stay clear of overhanging branches after Vardah felled about 15 lakh trees across the city.

Large residences near the 10 kW line

Rutland Gate Road and its neighbours are among the costliest addresses in Chennai, and large independent houses here can justify systems near the domestic ceiling. A 10 kW system makes about 16,000 units a year at Chennai district's 1,600 units per kW. Up to 10 kW, a home keeps net metering up to its sanctioned load and pays only the network charge on generation, about ₹0.32 a unit. Above 10 kW the house loses the PM Surya Ghar subsidy and needs CEIG approval and a separate generation meter, so going to 12 kW only pays if the extra units are genuinely used.

Check your output against the weather station next door

IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre at Nungambakkam is one of the two places in Chennai where official weather observations are made, the other being Meenambakkam. The rainfall IMD reports for the city in the northeast monsoon is recorded at these stations. That gives owners here a handy check: when generation drops in October to December, compare it with the rainy and overcast days reported for Nungambakkam before suspecting a fault. A drop on clear, dry days points instead to new shade, soiling or an inverter problem.

What we install

What we install in Nungambakkam

The process

How installation works

1

Free site survey

Shade-free roof area measured across the day, structure checked, connection name and sanctioned load confirmed.

2

Design and itemised quotation

Sized against twelve months of consumption, with every component named.

3

Approvals filed

PM Surya Ghar and TANGEDCO net metering, plus load enhancement or phase conversion in parallel where needed.

4

Installation

One to three days for a residential system, carried out by our own team rather than subcontracted.

5

Inspection and commissioning

TANGEDCO inspects, the net meter goes in, the system goes live.

6

Subsidy tracked to your account

And two years of maintenance included from commissioning.

We check the name on your electricity connection at the survey, because a mismatch stops more applications than any technical issue. See what to keep ready.

Free, no obligation

What will it cost on your roof in Nungambakkam?

Not sure you control the roof?

In converted and multi tenant buildings you often do not, and that is the first thing we check. A short call saves you a wasted survey.

What happens after you send your details

  1. We call you within one working day, and an engineer rather than a salesperson attends the site.
  2. The survey is free. We measure usable area and shading, check your connection and sanctioned load, and photograph the site.
  3. You get an itemised quotation naming every component and brand, with the subsidy or depreciation position set out.
  4. No obligation at any point. If solar does not make sense for your property, we will say so.

We will call you within one working day with a figure. No site visit is needed for that; the survey only happens if you want to go ahead. Your number stays with us and is never sold.

Common questions

Solar in Nungambakkam, common questions

Can I install solar on a leased office in Nungambakkam?

Only with the property owner’s written agreement, and in many converted or multi-tenant buildings the roof is not available at all. This is the most common reason a Nungambakkam commercial enquiry does not proceed, which is why we establish it in the first conversation rather than after a survey.

Are converted bungalow roofs suitable for solar?

Often, but the structural assessment matters more than usual. A terrace built for a residence and now supporting commercial use may already carry loads it was not designed for, including air conditioning plant added over the years. Usable area is also frequently broken up by staircase blocks, tanks and later additions.

How much of a hotel’s electricity bill will solar cover?

The daytime portion, which includes laundry, kitchen and daytime cooling and is substantial. Evening and overnight consumption from guest rooms, lighting and continuous services falls outside generating hours and cannot be served by solar without storage. A load profile analysis over twelve months gives the honest figure.

How long does installation take in Nungambakkam?

Eight to fourteen weeks for a commercial property in Nungambakkam, compared with six to ten for a house. The approval path is longer for non-domestic connections, and installation is scheduled around trading hours.

Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?

For homes, yes. For the commercial connections common in Nungambakkam, there is no PM Surya Ghar subsidy, so what we file is the TANGEDCO net feed-in application, and we supply the invoice and commissioning documents needed for accelerated depreciation and GST input credit.

What is included after installation?

Two years of free maintenance from commissioning, covering panel cleaning, annual inspection of connections and structure, generation monitoring and warranty coordination with the manufacturer.

Our house is in the old lake area and sits below the road. Is solar still a good idea?

Yes. The panels are on the roof and unaffected by water on the street. What needs care is where the inverter, boxes and meter sit: keep them above the level water has reached on your street, on the first floor or terrace stair room if possible, and seal every cable entry.

My bungalow uses enough power for more than 10 kW. What changes above that?

Above 10 kW a home loses the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, needs CEIG approval and must have a separate generation meter. Many large homes do better staying at 10 kW, with an elevated structure that keeps the terrace usable, and using the units fully rather than adding capacity for a smaller gain.
