Porur has grown faster than almost anywhere in west Chennai, and most of what stands there now was built in the last twenty years. That makes it one of the more straightforward places in the city to install on. It is also a hospital cluster, which is a very different kind of solar project.

Streets on the lake bund

In December 2024, after colonies in Iyyappanthangal flooded when Porur lake rose, the Water Resources Department replied to residents that the lake had not reached full capacity and that they might raise the height of their houses. The official added that areas on the lake bund see water stagnation even before the lake is full. If your house is in one of these colonies, design the solar installation as if water will reach the ground floor again: inverter and distribution box on an upper floor or the terrace, earthing connections inspected after every monsoon, and no cable joint left in a ground-level box. Earthing pits near the bund sit in waterlogged soil for weeks, so their connections should be checked for corrosion each year.

The surplus canal, and power cut for safety

Porur lake's surplus canal runs through Mugalivakkam to the Adyar. In November 2022 it carried about 1,100 cusecs, well above its capacity, and spilled into Thiruvalluvar Nagar and Arumugam Nagar for three days; one resident said power was disconnected on the Sunday for safety. When the distribution company cuts supply to a flooded street, a grid-tied solar system stops too, which is the correct behaviour. What matters is what happens next: before the system is switched back on, the inverter, isolators and earthing should be checked for water. If your street loses power this way most years, a hybrid inverter with a battery mounted high on the building is worth pricing. The battery belongs at the same height as the inverter.

Next to the elevated metro line

Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro's Phase II runs through Porur on an elevated alignment, with nine elevated stations on the Porur to Poonamallee stretch and land taken at Porur junction. A terrace beside the viaduct or a station can lose afternoon or morning sun to the structure, and construction dust settles on panels faster. We include the viaduct in the shade check and suggest checking output on the monitoring app weekly while work continues nearby. At 1,600 units per kW, a 5 kW system makes about 8,000 units a year and costs about ₹3,20,000 before subsidy and about ₹2,20,000 after both subsidies. Above 4 kW a house needs three-phase supply, so check the connection before choosing 5 kW.
