The lake that became housing
Velachery Lake once covered about 265 acres. It is now about 55, after the government allotted 53 acres to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and 34 acres to the Slum Clearance Board for housing. Velachery is also part of the 235 sq km catchment that drains into the Pallikaranai Marsh, which has lost around 87% of its 1965 extent. Rain from the surrounding areas still runs towards the old lake bed. If your block stands on or near it, treat the ground floor as floodable when placing solar inverters, battery and distribution boards, even if your own building stayed dry last time.
