Solar Panel Installation in Perumbakkam

Multi block complexes designed around your actual metering, not a single assumed connection

Perumbakkam is dominated by large multi-block apartment complexes, and that raises a question smaller societies never face: whether the whole complex takes one system or each block takes its own. Getting that decision right at the start saves considerable money later.

The short answer

Looking for a solar panel installation company in Perumbakkam?

Perumbakkam has houses and flats side by side, which means the useful answer depends on whether you own your roof outright or share it with an association. The area borders marshland, which means high humidity year-round and outdoor enclosures that need to be rated for it, not just weatherproof on paper. Installing across Chennai since 2020, we file the PM Surya Ghar application worth up to ₹78,000 for households, handle TANGEDCO net metering end to end, and cover two years of maintenance after commissioning. Before the survey, you can check the solar panel price in Chennai for 3 kW to 10 kW systems and see how our solar panel installation in Chennai works, the same process we follow in Perumbakkam.

The local picture

One system or one per block

Perumbakkam’s apartment stock includes complexes with several blocks under a single association, and those complexes frequently have more than one TANGEDCO service connection, sometimes one per block. Because a solar system connects to a specific service connection and offsets consumption on that connection only, the design decision is whether to install one larger system on a single connection or separate systems across several.

What determines the answer

How many connections the complex actually has

Some multi-block complexes run all common services from one connection; others meter each block separately. This has to be established before design, not assumed.

Where the load sits

If lifts and pumps for all blocks run off one connection, a single larger system is simpler and cheaper per kW. If each block carries its own, separate systems match the load better.

Roof availability by block

Some blocks have clear terraces and others carry tanks, machine rooms or antennae, so capacity is rarely equal across blocks.

The subsidy ceiling

The common-area provision allows ₹18,000 per kW up to 500 kW, subject to 3 kW per residential unit across the complex. On a large complex that headroom is substantial and rarely the binding constraint.

Why it matters financially

Match the generation to where the load actually is

Installing one 40 kW system is cheaper per kW than four 10 kW systems, because mobilisation, design and approvals are largely fixed costs. But a single system that exports because it sits on a connection with modest load will earn feed-in rates rather than offsetting consumption, which wastes the advantage.

The other constraint

Large general bodies take longer

We prepare the load assessment and savings projection free, broken down by block where the metering warrants it, so the committee can put real figures to members.

Perumbakkam solar: flood paths, tall blocks and long outages

Perumbakkam has flooded in 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023, according to a December 2023 study by IRCDUC. Its lakes sit on old flood pathways, so where the electrical equipment goes matters as much as the panels.

Ground-floor electrical rooms are the weak point

When the Cyclone Michaung floods reached Perumbakkam's resettlement colonies in December 2023, ground-floor homes were quickly inundated, and residents went three days without electricity or water. In many apartment complexes the main LT panel, the meter room and often the inverter all sit on the ground floor. The net meter has to stay with TNPDCL's supply point, but the solar inverters and distribution boxes do not. For a common area system here, we put the inverters on the terrace or the top floor landing and bring a single AC cable down to the panel. That keeps the costly parts above any water level the area has seen.

Three days without power: what solar can and cannot do

A standard on-grid system shuts down the moment the grid goes off, so it would not have helped those three days. If keeping water running matters, a hybrid inverter with a battery can be sized to back up one sump or borewell pump, the stair lighting and the security gate. A lift, or every pump in the complex, needs a far larger battery and is rarely worth it. We design the backup circuit as a separate board, so the committee knows exactly what stays on in an outage.

Sizing a complex on the Chengalpattu yield

Perumbakkam is in Chengalpattu district, where the state rooftop calculator gives about 1,580 units per kW a year. A 20 kW common area system makes about 31,600 units a year, roughly 2,630 a month, against the lifts, pumps, STP and corridor lighting. The common area subsidy is ₹18,000 per kW, so a 20 kW system claims ₹3,60,000. Compare that with your common area bills over twelve months, because generation and load need to match on the same connection. We need those bills before we can size anything.

Independent houses near the lakes

Perumbakkam also has independent houses alongside its flats, and the flood record applies to them just as much. Keep the inverter, distribution boxes and any battery on the terrace or an upper floor, with only the net meter at ground level. At the Chengalpattu yield, a 3 kW system makes about 4,740 units a year. It costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy and about ₹1,10,000 after the ₹78,000 central subsidy and the ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up, for an eligible home. Above 4 kW, three-phase supply is needed.

How installation works

1

Free site survey

Shade-free roof area measured across the day, structure checked, connection name and sanctioned load confirmed.

2

Design and itemised quotation

Sized against twelve months of consumption, with every component named.

3

Approvals filed

PM Surya Ghar and TANGEDCO net metering, plus load enhancement or phase conversion in parallel where needed.

4

Installation

One to three days for a residential system, carried out by our own team rather than subcontracted.

5

Inspection and commissioning

TANGEDCO inspects, the net meter goes in, the system goes live.

6

Subsidy tracked to your account

And two years of maintenance included from commissioning.

We check the name on your electricity connection at the survey, because a mismatch stops more applications than any technical issue. See what to keep ready.

Free, no obligation

What will it cost on your roof in Perumbakkam?

Several blocks and several meters?

Then one system may be cheaper per kW and still the wrong answer. We match generation to where the load actually sits before designing anything.

What happens after you send your details

  1. We call you within one working day, and an engineer rather than a salesperson attends the site.
  2. The survey is free. We measure usable area and shading, check your connection and sanctioned load, and photograph the site.
  3. You get an itemised quotation naming every component and brand, with the subsidy or depreciation position set out.
  4. No obligation at any point. If solar does not make sense for your property, we will say so.

We will call you within one working day with a figure. No site visit is needed for that; the survey only happens if you want to go ahead. Your number stays with us and is never sold.

Common questions

Solar in Perumbakkam, common questions

Should our multi-block complex install one system or several?

It depends on the metering. A solar system connects to one service connection and offsets consumption on that connection only, so if all common services run off a single connection, one larger system is cheaper per kW. If each block is metered separately, separate systems match the load better. We establish the connection position before design rather than assuming it.

Is a bigger single system always cheaper?

Cheaper per kW, yes, because mobilisation, design and approvals are largely fixed costs. But if that system sits on a connection with modest load it will export rather than offset, earning feed-in rates well below the tariff. The saving only materialises where the generation matches where the load actually is.

How much subsidy can a large Perumbakkam complex claim?

₹18,000 per kW under the common-area provision, up to 500 kW and subject to 3 kW per residential unit across the complex. On a large complex that headroom is substantial and rarely the binding constraint, so roof area and load position usually decide the size instead.

How long does installation take in Perumbakkam?

Six to ten weeks in Perumbakkam. Earthing in marshy ground needs more attention and occasionally a deeper pit, which adds a day on site but not to the overall programme, since TANGEDCO approval governs that.

Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?

Yes. Both the PM Surya Ghar claim and the TANGEDCO net metering application are ours to file and follow up. In the Perumbakkam area we also check the sanctioned load early, because load enhancement filed late is the commonest cause of a delayed connection.

What is included after installation?

Two years of free maintenance from commissioning, covering panel cleaning, annual inspection of connections and structure, generation monitoring and warranty coordination with the manufacturer.

Our complex lost power for days during the 2023 floods. Will solar keep our pumps running next time?

Not with a plain on-grid system, which shuts down when the grid does. A hybrid system with a battery can keep one pump and essential lighting going, provided the battery and inverter are mounted above flood level. Size the backup to essentials, because backing up lifts and every pump makes the battery very expensive.

Does it matter that Perumbakkam is in Chengalpattu district rather than Chennai?

Not for the subsidy or the approvals, which are the same. We use the Chengalpattu yield of about 1,580 units per kW a year for sizing, slightly below Chennai's 1,600, so the system size can come out marginally larger for the same consumption.
