Built on a filled tank: keep equipment above the plinth

The Spur Tank once covered much of Chetpet and was filled in over the last century. Chetpet Lake, now run by the Fisheries Department, is what remains, and it still serves as a groundwater recharge point for the area. In 2025 the corporation listed the Harrington Road subway at Chetpet among subways to be repaired after complaints that they waterlog within minutes of rain. Ground that was once a tank bed and roads that collect water point to one design rule. The inverter and AC distribution board go on the first floor or the terrace stair room, not the ground floor wall beside the meter, and cable runs come down from the roof. If the service meter sits low, keep every solar joint near it above floor level.

Schools and institutions: size to the term, not the year

Chetpet is home to several historic schools, including Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Sherwood Hall, Union Christian and Auxilium Girls. Schools sit on non-domestic connections, which are on net feed-in. During the summer vacation almost everything a rooftop system makes is exported, and exports are credited at ₹3.61 a unit up to 10 kW and ₹3.37 from 11 to 150 kW, well below the tariff the school pays. So we size from weekday term-time daytime load, read from twelve months of bills, so that vacation exports stay a small share. Where a school is run by a trust with no taxable profit, accelerated depreciation is worth nothing. Weekends and public holidays add more exports, so the logger readings we take cover a full school week, not one day.

A Chetpet house: three-phase decides the size

The state rooftop calculator gives Chennai district 1,600 units per kW a year, about 4.4 units a day. A 3 kW system makes about 4,800 units a year, and a 5 kW system about 8,000. Single-phase supply is limited to 4 kW, so an older Chetpet bungalow still on a single-phase connection needs conversion to three-phase before it can take 5 kW. That conversion is filed alongside the net metering application. A 5 kW home system costs about ₹3,20,000 before subsidy and about ₹2,20,000 after both subsidies, and the bill that remains is mostly the network charge of about ₹0.32 a unit. If the house is let in portions with separate meters, each meter is assessed as its own case.
