Storm surge and floodwater: what goes where
When Cyclone Vardah crossed the coast near Chennai in December 2016, a storm surge of more than 1 metre above the tide reportedly flooded low-lying parts of the Ennore region. In December 2015, Ernavur, Athipattu and Kuruvimedu stayed under water because the shrunken creek could not carry the floodwater away. Panels on a roof are safe from this; ground floor equipment is not. Put the inverter, the AC and DC boxes and any battery on the first floor or in the terrace stair room, bring the AC cable down to the meter in sealed conduit, and fit a clearly marked isolator so the system can be switched off quickly if water rises.

Oily and ashy grime needs gentler cleaning
On 4 December 2023, oil from the CPCL refinery reportedly leaked into the Kosasthalaiyar, Ennore Creek and the sea, spreading with the Michaung floodwater over about 20 sq km from Kasimedu to the Kosasthalaiyar. CPCB data cited for the area put PM2.5 at 88 µg/m³ in June 2017, against a standard of 60, much of it from the thermal plants. Grime like this does not rinse off with plain water and leaves streaks that cut output. Clean with soft brushes, plenty of water and a mild cleaner the module maker allows, early in the morning while the glass is cool. Avoid pressure washers, scouring pads and harsh solvents, which damage the anti-reflective coating and can void the module warranty.
