Four to five days of standing water: where the equipment goes

Residents of Ram Nagar, which straddles Madipakkam and Puzhuthivakkam, describe water standing for four to five days every monsoon, and in December 2023 a single day brought 30 to 50 cm of rain. The councillor reported ₹130 crore of stormwater drain work in progress, about three quarters done by August 2024, with a retaining wall along Veerangal Odai completed. Until those drains prove themselves, design for the water. The inverter and AC distribution board go on the first floor or in the stair head room on the terrace. Cables run down from the roof, not along the compound wall. The earth pit goes on the highest part of the plot, not the corner where water collects. Ask for the solar isolator to be fitted at the same raised height.

Lake birds and panel cleaning

Madipakkam Lake is an ecologically protected area that hosts migratory birds every season, and Puzhuthivakkam Lake lies close by. Birds perch on panel frames and parapets, and droppings on the glass shade individual cells, which costs far more output than an even layer of dust. For homes near the lakes, bird guard mesh around the edges of the array stops birds nesting underneath, and a cleaning check every two weeks during the migratory months is sensible. Monitoring shows the effect clearly: a sudden drop in one string's output usually means a soiled panel, not a fault. Mesh also keeps out dry leaves and nesting material, which can block the gaps under the modules and hold moisture against the frames.

Tight terraces and the 3 kW floor

The state rooftop calculator gives Chennai district 1,600 units per kW a year, about 4.4 units a day. A 3 kW system makes about 4,800 units a year, around 800 units per bi-monthly cycle, and needs roughly 150 sq ft of shade-free roof. A 3 kW system costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy and about ₹1,10,000 after both subsidies. We install from 3 kW.
