The most corrosive site conditions in the city
Manali combines two corrosion drivers that rarely occur together at this intensity: proximity to the coast, bringing salt-laden air, and a dense concentration of petrochemical and heavy industry, bringing an industrial atmosphere. Together these attack mounting structures, fasteners and module frames considerably faster than a coastal location alone. Hardware that performs adequately elsewhere in Chennai will not last here.

Continuous process operations and sheet roof condition
Manali’s heavy industry means large sheet roofs, HT connections with substantial contract demand, and installation that has to work around continuous operations rather than a day shift. Shutdown windows are usually the only viable tie-in opportunity and need booking well in advance. In this atmosphere the roof sheeting itself corrodes, so remaining life needs assessing honestly before an array is fixed to it. Demand charges are not displaced by solar, and on an HT connection they are a substantial part of the bill.

Manali solar: oil-laden floods, a polluted air shed and home sizing
Manali town sits on the western side of a 2,000 hectare petrochemical complex built around the Chennai Petroleum Corporation refinery, which the Central Pollution Control Board scored 76.32 on its Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index, placing it among India's critically polluted industrial areas.
After Michaung: floodwater that carried oil
After the Cyclone Michaung floods of 4 December 2023, residents found heavy oil residue in the water near the CPCL refinery in Manali. The spill spread over about 20 square kilometres, travelled through the Buckingham Canal and reached the sea through the Ennore Creek. In nearby Ernavur, oily water entered homes and damaged household goods and parked vehicles. The state reported removing 105.82 kilolitres of oily water and 393.5 tonnes of oily sludge. For a home on a low street, the lesson is that floodwater here can be both deep and contaminated. Keep the inverter, distribution board and meter-side wiring at first-floor level or on the terrace, and have the system insulation-tested before switching it back on after any flood.
Cleaning panels in a critically polluted air shed
TNPCB's action plan for the Manali cluster lists stacks across the refinery, petrochemical and biomass-boiler units that it monitors for particulates, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, alongside continuous ambient stations at Manali, Kattivakkam and Tiruvottiyur. It also records relative humidity of around 70 to 80%. Damp air makes fine deposits stick to module glass rather than blow off. Do not rely on a citywide cleaning default. Start with a wash every two weeks in the first dry season, compare daily units in the inverter app before and after each wash, and stretch or shorten the interval from what the numbers show. Use soft water and a non-abrasive brush, since grit dragged across the glass scratches the anti-reflective coating.
Sizing a Manali home
The smallest system we install is 3 kW. Using the Chennai district yield of 1,600 units per kW a year, it makes about 4,800 units a year, roughly 800 per two-month billing cycle, and costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy and about ₹1,10,000 after the central ₹78,000 and the ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up. Homes pay no fixed charge, so what remains is mainly the network charge on generation, about ₹0.32 a unit. Single-phase supply stops at 4 kW, so a larger house needs three-phase before commissioning. If the house is close to the refinery side, ask for the same corrosion-protected structure and fasteners as the industrial jobs here, since the same air reaches both.

How do I check an installer has specified correctly for Manali?
Ask what corrosion class they are specifying to and why, and ask to see the IEC 61701 salt mist certification on the module datasheet. An installer quoting the same structure they would use for an inland Chennai site has not assessed the location.
Will solar reduce our plant’s demand charges?
Not reliably. Demand charges are levied on contract or recorded maximum demand, which can peak at night, at a shift change or on a cloudy afternoon. Solar reduces the energy charge on units generated during daylight hours. Any proposal implying an industrial bill disappears has not modelled the connection properly.
How long does installation take in Manali?
Eight to fourteen weeks for the industrial and commercial connections typical of Manali, against six to ten for a home. HT connections need more approval steps, and the work is usually phased around your shifts rather than done in one run.
Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?
Yes for residential connections. Note that the PM Surya Ghar subsidy does not apply to commercial or industrial connections, which is the position for most properties in Manali. For those we file the TANGEDCO net feed-in application and provide the documentation your accountant needs for accelerated depreciation instead.

Our Manali house flooded in December 2023. Can the inverter go on the ground floor?
We would not put it there. Floodwater in Manali in 2023 carried oil from the refinery area, and a submerged inverter is usually a write-off. Mount it at first-floor level or on the terrace, and have the system tested before it is switched back on after any flood.
How often will solar panels need cleaning in Manali?
More often than in most of Chennai, but the right interval comes from your own data. Begin with a wash every two weeks, watch the daily units in the inverter app, and adjust. Humidity of 70 to 80% makes industrial deposits cling, so a dry brush alone is rarely enough.
