Nandanam sits on the northern bank of the Adyar River, opposite Kotturpuram, and took its name in the 1950s from a state housing development. In 2015 it was among the areas that flooded heavily after water was released from Chembarambakkam.
River floods are different from rain floods
Nandanam's worst flood came from the river, not the sky. In 2015 Jafferkhanpet, Nandanam, Ashok Nagar and West Mambalam flooded heavily after water was released from Chembarambakkam into the Adyar, while in the December 2023 rains the same areas saw much less water. Better drains help with rain, but a river release can still push water into streets near the bank. For buildings on the river side of Nandanam, the inverter and AC distribution board go on the first floor or above, and cable entry comes from the terrace.
