In August 2026 the Greater Chennai Corporation told the occupants of 21 sea-facing bungalows and houses in Neelankarai, Injambakkam and Uthandi to vacate within 15 days for Coastal Regulation Zone violations, and asked three more owners to correct floor space violations. About 700 structures along this stretch were listed for action in 2020. The CRZ rules regulate construction and floor space; they do not mention rooftop panels. The practical points are two. If your building has a CRZ notice against it, settle that before spending on the roof. And keep the solar installation an open frame: an enclosed inverter room or a covered terrace built to house equipment could be treated as new construction, which is exactly what these notices target.

The Buckingham Canal side: water and long outages

After Cyclone Michaung, water entered the homes of about 2,000 residents along the Buckingham Canal in Neelankarai and Palavakkam and did not recede for over a day, while Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Vettuvankeni and Palavakkam were without electricity from early Monday. The canal had only about 70% of its carrying capacity available, according to reporting at the time. Two design decisions follow for houses on the inland side. Mount the inverter and distribution box high on the building, not in a ground-floor utility area. And understand that a grid-tied system stops during an outage; if a day without power is a real concern, a hybrid inverter with a battery sized to essential loads is the option to price.
