Solar equipment carries manufacturer warranties, but a warranty is a promise about the product rather than a service arrangement. When a panel or inverter fails, someone has to diagnose the fault, raise the claim with the manufacturer, remove and return the faulty item, obtain and install the replacement, and cover the labour and access costs of doing so. Which of those the manufacturer pays for, and which you or your installer do, is where most warranty disappointments originate.
The questions to ask before you buy
Who raises the claim?
A good installer handles the manufacturer relationship. Being told to contact the manufacturer yourself, in another state, is a poor outcome.
Who pays for labour and access?
Manufacturer warranties typically cover the replacement product, not the cost of getting to your roof, removing the failed unit and installing the new one. Ask explicitly.
How long will you be without generation?
Replacement modules and inverters are not always held in stock locally, and a wait of weeks is common. Ask what the installer holds and what the typical turnaround is.
What happens if the manufacturer is no longer trading?
This is a real risk over twenty-five years, and it is a reason to weigh brand stability rather than only price.
What is the installer’s own workmanship warranty?

Large plants: the roof is only part of the answer
A large plant in Padi usually runs on a high-tension connection with a big daytime load. A rooftop system on the sheds offsets part of that, but the roof area rarely matches the demand. Larger daytime loads can also be met through captive or group captive solar plants elsewhere in the state, with power carried over the grid under open access. That route has its own approvals and charges and needs a separate study. Rooftop solar cuts the energy charge on the units it produces. It does not reduce the demand charge on an HT bill, so judge the saving against the energy component, not the whole bill.
Smaller units and workshops: size to the weekday load
Smaller workshops and units in and around Padi are usually on low-tension non-domestic connections, which work on net feed-in. Every solar unit used on site saves the full commercial tariff. Every unit exported is credited at only ₹3.61 for systems up to 10 kW and ₹3.37 from 11 to 150 kW. So the right size is set by the load the unit runs on an ordinary working day, between about 9 am and 4 pm, not by the roof area. A system sized to the full roof will export heavily on holidays and shutdown days at the low rate. Pull a year of bills and note the weekly off day before agreeing a size.
Korattur lake next door: water at ground level
Korattur lake covers 990 acres and is part of a chain with Ambattur and Madhavaram lakes, passing surplus from one to the next. During Cyclone Michaung in December 2023 the Army and the NDRF ran boat rescues in Korattur and Ambattur, both neighbours of Padi. For units and homes on the lower ground toward the lake, keep the inverter, ACDB and LT panel connections above the level water has reached before, on a mezzanine, upper floor or raised plinth. Route cables overhead or along walls rather than in floor trenches, which fill first.
Homes at the Chennai yield
For a house, the state calculator uses 1,600 units per kW a year in Chennai district, about 4.4 units a day. A 3 kW system makes about 4,800 units a year and costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy, about ₹1,10,000 after the ₹78,000 central subsidy and the ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up. A 5 kW system makes about 8,000 units and costs about ₹2,20,000 after both, but needs three-phase supply, since single-phase stops at 4 kW. Unlike the factories nearby, a home pays no fixed charge and stays on net metering up to its sanctioned load.

Usually the panel’s performance, meaning it will still produce a stated proportion of its original output at year 25. That is different from the product warranty against manufacturing defects, which is shorter, and different again from the inverter warranty and the installer’s workmanship warranty. Three separate things with three different periods.
Who pays if a panel fails?
The manufacturer typically replaces the product, but labour, access and installation costs are frequently not covered. Ask explicitly who raises the claim, who pays to get someone onto your roof, and how long a replacement takes to arrive. A quote saying only 25 year warranty is telling you very little.
What if the manufacturer stops trading?
It is a genuine risk over twenty-five years and a reason to weigh brand stability alongside price. It is also why the installer’s own workmanship warranty and their willingness to handle claims matter, since they are the party you can actually reach.
How long does installation take in Padi?
Eight to fourteen weeks for the industrial and commercial connections typical of Padi, against six to ten for a home. HT connections need more approval steps, and the work is usually phased around your shifts rather than done in one run.
Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?
