The short answer

Looking for a solar panel installation company in Ramapuram?

In Ramapuram we work on both independent terraces and apartment common areas, and the two need different paperwork even on the same street. Because it is a newer area, roofs here are generally in good condition and the paperwork moves faster than the average. Installing across Chennai since 2020, we file the PM Surya Ghar application worth up to ₹78,000 for households, handle TANGEDCO net metering end to end, and cover two years of maintenance after commissioning. Before the survey, you can check the solar panel price in Chennai for 3 kW to 10 kW systems and see how our solar panel installation in Chennai works, the same process we follow in Ramapuram.

The local picture

Should you lease your roof to a solar developer?

Building owners with substantial roof area are frequently approached with proposals to lease that roof to a solar developer, who installs and owns a system and either sells the power to the building’s occupants or exports it. It is a legitimate arrangement, but the roof owner is granting rights over their building for fifteen to twenty-five years and the terms deserve proper scrutiny.

What a roof owner should establish before signing

What exactly is being granted

And over how much of the roof. Exclusive use of the whole terrace is a very different grant from a defined area.

Access rights

The developer will need access for maintenance for the life of the agreement. Hours, notice periods and escorting arrangements should be documented.

Responsibility for the roof itself

Who repairs waterproofing damaged during installation or maintenance, and what happens when the roof membrane reaches the end of its life while an array sits on it.

What you receive

Whether rent, a discounted tariff for the building’s own consumption, or a share of generation. A discounted tariff is only valuable if the building actually consumes the output.

End of term

Does the system transfer to you, get removed, or continue under a new agreement, and who pays for removal and reinstatement.

Your own future use of the roof

Granting it for twenty-five years forecloses other uses, including your own solar installation, telecom leasing, or building alterations, and change of ownership provisions affect saleability.

The alternative worth comparing

If the building consumes daytime power itself, owning usually returns more

You capture the full value of every unit rather than a share of it, and accelerated depreciation and GST input credit strengthen that further for a profitable entity. We are happy to look at a roof lease proposal you have received and tell you how it compares to owning, whether or not the work comes to us.

What Ramapuram owners should know: flood history, offices and airport heights

Ramapuram lies on Mount Poonamallee Road about 3 km from Guindy, in Greater Chennai Corporation wards 154 and 155. In the 2015 floods, homes in the nearby IPS officers' colony at Manapakkam were surrounded by almost 14 feet of water.

The Adyar and the Manapakkam canal

The New Indian Express described the 2015 floods as the great equaliser in Ramapuram, with the IPS officers' colony at Manapakkam surrounded by almost 14 feet of water and families in the Burma colony living with the Adyar in their backyard. In December 2023 the Manapakkam canal, the zone's only macro drain from Porur lake to the Adyar, overflowed again and parts of Thiruvalluvar Nagar stayed under water for more than three days. On streets near the river or the canal, put the inverter and boxes on an upper floor, run cables down in sealed conduit, and keep an isolator you can reach without wading.

Offices and hospitals: daytime load and generator sync

Ramapuram's large roofs belong to IT offices such as DLF IT Park and L&T Infotech, and to MIOT and SRM hospitals. These are non-domestic connections on net feed-in, with exports credited at ₹3.61 a unit up to 10 kW and ₹3.37 from 11 to 150 kW, so systems should be sized to daytime self-use. Hospitals and offices that run diesel generators during outages need a generator synchronisation controller, which limits solar output so it never feeds back into the generator. Loads far larger than any roof can carry are better served by captive or open access solar, with rooftop covering what it can.

Airport height limits on tall buildings

Under GSR 751(E), the Airports Authority of India issues colour coded zoning maps that set the permissible top elevation for every grid within 20 km of an airport's reference point, and Tamil Nadu's building rules require an AAI or Air Force NOC for buildings rising 30 metres or more within that radius. Ramapuram falls well inside it. A rooftop array on a house is no concern, but an apartment block built close to its permitted elevation should check the approved figure before adding an elevated structure, which adds two to three metres. A low-tilt frame avoids the question entirely.

Sizing a Ramapuram home

The state calculator uses 1,600 units per kW a year for Chennai district, about 4.4 units a day. A 3 kW system makes about 4,800 units a year and costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy, about ₹1,10,000 after the central and state subsidies. A 5 kW system makes about 8,000 units a year and costs about ₹3,20,000, or about ₹2,20,000 after both. Single-phase supply stops at 4 kW, so a 5 kW home needs three-phase, filed alongside the net metering application.

What we install

What we install in Ramapuram

The process

How installation works

1

Free site survey

Shade-free roof area measured across the day, structure checked, connection name and sanctioned load confirmed.

2

Design and itemised quotation

Sized against twelve months of consumption, with every component named.

3

Approvals filed

PM Surya Ghar and TANGEDCO net metering, plus load enhancement or phase conversion in parallel where needed.

4

Installation

One to three days for a residential system, carried out by our own team rather than subcontracted.

5

Inspection and commissioning

TANGEDCO inspects, the net meter goes in, the system goes live.

6

Subsidy tracked to your account

And two years of maintenance included from commissioning.

We check the name on your electricity connection at the survey, because a mismatch stops more applications than any technical issue. See what to keep ready.

Common questions

Solar in Ramapuram, common questions

Should I lease my roof to a solar developer?

It can be reasonable, but read the terms carefully. You are granting rights over your building for fifteen to twenty-five years. Establish what area is granted, the access rights, who is responsible for roof waterproofing, what you actually receive, what happens at end of term, and whether the agreement binds a future purchaser of the building.

Is leasing the roof better than owning the system?

If your building consumes substantial daytime power itself, owning usually returns more, because you capture the full value of every unit rather than a share of it. Accelerated depreciation and GST input credit strengthen that further for a profitable entity. Leasing suits owners who do not consume the output and want no capital outlay.

Will a roof lease affect my ability to sell the building?

It can. A twenty-five year agreement over the roof is something a purchaser inherits, and whether it binds them should be explicit in the terms. It also forecloses your own future use of that roof, including telecom leasing or your own solar installation. Both are worth weighing before signing.

How long does installation take in Ramapuram?

Six to eight weeks from survey to a live, net-metered system is typical in Ramapuram, and newer areas often land at the shorter end because connection records are current. The installation itself is one to three days for a home; the rest is TANGEDCO approval and the meter.

Do you handle the subsidy and TANGEDCO paperwork?

Yes, both are ours to file. Applications from newer areas like Ramapuram usually move faster because the connection details and sanctioned load are recent and correct. We still verify the name on the connection and the load at the survey, then track the subsidy to your bank account after commissioning.

What is included after installation?

Two years of free maintenance from commissioning, covering panel cleaning, annual inspection of connections and structure, generation monitoring and warranty coordination with the manufacturer.

Our street flooded in 2015 and again in 2023. Can a solar system be protected?

Yes. The panels are on the roof; the parts at risk are the inverter, boxes and meter. Mount the first two upstairs, seal cable entries, and keep the isolator where you can reach it from a dry floor. After any flooding, have the meter board checked before switching the system back on.

We live in a tall apartment near the airport. Does a raised solar frame need AAI permission?

Usually the building's approval already fixes its permitted top elevation. A raised frame adds height, so check the approved elevation on the sanctioned plan or the building's NOC. If the frame would take the building over, a low-tilt structure on the terrace solves it.
