Climbing plants will shade the array and hold moisture against the steel. Soil, compost and organic debris around structure feet and roof drainage points cause problems over time. In 2023 residents along the Otteri Nullah, including a resident of Agasthiyar Nagar in Villivakkam whose compound wall is a foot from the canal, told The Hindu that effluents and gases from the canal corrode metal at home and damage electronic gadgets. An inverter is an electronic gadget with exposed terminals. Near the nullah, mount it on the side of the building facing away from the canal, in shade and with airflow, inside an IP65-rated enclosure. Use a sealed distribution box, galvanised structure and fasteners, and properly crimped, sealed connectors. Ask for the terminals and connectors to be inspected at every maintenance visit rather than only when output drops. If the inverter has to go on the canal side, a small ventilated canopy keeps rain and direct fumes off it.
Water on the nullah side and around the lake
The Otteri Nullah carries floodwater from central Chennai, and when it runs full, adjacent roads waterlog; residents of Sidco Nagar, Baba Nagar and Villivakkam named waterlogging as a standing concern in 2022. The nullah runs through narrow Housing Board layouts where desilting is hard, which is why overflow onto adjacent roads keeps recurring. The restored lake now holds far more: desilting raised its capacity from 20,000 to 2.9 lakh cubic metres, and stormwater drains were linked to channel monsoon runoff into it. For houses on the low streets near either, the inverter and AC distribution box go on an upper-floor wall or the terrace, not in a ground-floor corner, and cables from the roof come down in conduit on the outside of the building.
A 900 sq ft plot can still take 3 kW
Many families near the nullah bought small Housing Board plots of about 900 sq ft. After the staircase head room and an overhead tank, the terrace that remains is limited, but a solar array needs roughly 80 to 100 sq ft per kW of shade-free roof, so 3 kW needs about 240 to 300 sq ft. On narrow 30-foot roads, neighbouring buildings set the shade, which is why usable area gets measured rather than estimated. A 3 kW system makes about 4,800 units a year at the Chennai figure, and costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy and about ₹1,10,000 after both subsidies.
