Gummidipoondi is the northernmost Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, about 45 km from Chennai on NH16. The Hindu described it in March 2026 as a once sleepy town turned industrial powerhouse by the SIPCOT industrial complex, and a new SIPCOT estate is now coming up at Manellur.
New factory roofs at Manellur: build them solar-ready
SIPCOT's Manellur estate got its first environmental clearance in 2020 for 691.587 acres in Manellur and Soorapoondi villages. In January 2025 the NGT's Southern Bench told SIPCOT to seek one combined clearance for all phases, and Voltas has already begun operating in the second phase. If you are building a unit there, the cheapest time to plan solar is before the roof goes up. Ask the structural designer to allow for the extra load of panels and frames on the purlins, include walkways for cleaning, and leave cable tray routes and spare space in the LT panel room. A sheet roof designed for an array avoids strengthening work later.
Established plants: rooftop, captive or open access
For a plant in the SIPCOT complex on a high-tension connection with a large daytime load, a rooftop system on the sheds offsets part of the energy charge, but it does not reduce the demand charge, and the roof rarely matches the load. Plants that want a larger share can add captive or group captive solar generated elsewhere in the state and carried under open access, which needs its own approvals and study. Smaller units on low-tension non-domestic connections work on net feed-in: exports earn ₹3.61 a unit up to 10 kW and ₹3.37 from 11 to 150 kW, so size those systems to the weekday daytime load.

The Thamarai lake in the main village was once a groundwater recharge source and drinking water supply. The Hindu reported in 2026 that it is now heavily polluted and choked with water hyacinth, and the SIPCOT manufacturers' association is still asking for a common sewage treatment plant. Panel cleaning needs water, and water high in dissolved solids leaves a film on the glass that cuts output and gets harder to remove.
