Solar Panel Installation in Tambaram

Larger plots here take 5 kW to 8 kW, cutting ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 a month

Tambaram has the plot sizes Chennai’s inner suburbs lost decades ago. Independent houses with genuine terrace area, room for elevated structures, and consumption to match. It is also a commercial centre in its own right, which means a solar enquiry here is as likely to come from a showroom or a clinic as from a household.

The short answer

Looking for a solar panel installation company in Tambaram?

In Tambaram we work on both independent terraces and apartment common areas, and the two need different paperwork even on the same street. Flood history matters here. Panels are safe on the roof; the inverter is not, so here we plan its position around water levels first. Blues Renewables has worked across Chennai since 2020. We handle the PM Surya Ghar claim of up to ₹78,000 where the property is residential, file the TANGEDCO net metering paperwork, and include two years of maintenance. Before the survey, you can check the solar panel price in Chennai for 3 kW to 10 kW systems and see how our solar panel installation in Chennai works, the same process we follow in Tambaram.

The local picture

Larger plots, larger systems, and the three-phase question

Tambaram, Selaiyur and the surrounding suburbs have significantly larger residential plots than most of central Chennai, which means larger usable terraces and systems that commonly run 5 kW and above. That size threshold matters procedurally: TANGEDCO supplies three-phase above 4,000 watts of connected load, so most Tambaram installations involve either an existing three-phase connection or a phase conversion.

What that means for your timeline

Phase conversion is a separate TANGEDCO application

And it must be complete before the solar system can be commissioned.

Filed alongside the net metering application, the two run in parallel

Filed afterwards, a six-week project becomes twelve. We check your connection at the survey specifically to avoid this.

Sanctioned load enhancement

Is often needed too, for the same reason and with the same fix.

Outlying areas

Properties toward Mudichur, Perungalathur and Vandalur are further from both the coast and the metro. Standard specification is generally adequate, and access for installation is usually straightforward.

The second Tambaram factor

Space makes elevated structures genuinely practical

Larger terraces mean households that use the space for drying, storage or functions can keep it. Raising the array up to 9 feet leaves the space walkable and shaded, and it improves generation by letting air move under the panels.

Commercial

Solar for Tambaram businesses

Tambaram is a commercial centre serving the whole southern suburb belt: showrooms along the GST Road and station approaches, hospitals and clinics, colleges, and light industry toward the outskirts.

Showrooms and retail

Evening trading, so solar covers the daytime portion, and roof rights on leased frontage need checking.

Hospitals and clinics

Continuous load, with solar sitting alongside existing DG and UPS rather than replacing them.

Colleges and schools

Strong daytime match, with vacation periods affecting how a campus should be sized.

Light industry

Sheet roofs, higher connected loads, and often an HT connection, which changes the economics and the design.

Tambaram solar guide: flood lines, the air base and bigger plots

Tambaram recorded 490 mm of rain in the 24 hours from 8:30 am on 1 December 2015, and during Cyclone Michaung in 2023 houses in Mudichur and Peerkankaranai took up to 5 ft of water. In this part of the city, where the inverter goes matters as much as where the panels go.

Flood lines in Mudichur, Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur

DT Next reported houses in Varadharajapuram, Mudichur, Mudichur CTO Colony and Peerkankaranai flooded completely in December 2023, with ground floors under water. The New Indian Express said the worst-hit wards of Tambaram Corporation were in the Perungalathur zone, where canals to the Adyar have shrunk or vanished under housing. One Peerkankaranai resident told the paper Michaung was worse than 2015. If your house is in these areas, put the inverter, the solar distribution box and any battery on the first floor or the terrace, above the highest water level your street has seen. The net meter stays where TNPDCL fits it.

Near the Air Force Station

Tambaram Air Force Station is in Selaiyur, and many homes in Selaiyur sit close to it. A flush rooftop array adds very little height. An elevated structure adds two to three metres. If your building approval carried a height condition, whether from the defence authorities or from the Airports Authority of India's zoning map, keep the top of the array inside it. We ask for the approved plan at survey and design to it, rather than adding height first and checking later.

Sizing on the Chengalpattu figure

Tambaram is in Chengalpattu district, where the state rooftop calculator uses 1,580 units per kW a year, about 4.3 a day. A 5 kW system makes about 7,900 units a year, roughly 1,320 per bi-monthly cycle. An 8 kW system makes about 12,640 a year, roughly 2,110 a cycle, which suits the larger plots here with several air conditioners and a pump. A 5 kW system costs about ₹3,20,000 before subsidy and about ₹2,20,000 after the central and Tamil Nadu subsidies. Above 10 kW a home loses the subsidy and needs CEIG approval and a separate generation meter.

MEPZ and larger commercial roofs

The Madras Export Processing Zone covers 265 acres and employs over 26,000 people. Units outside the zone along GST Road are on normal non-domestic connections, where rooftop systems up to 150 kW run on net feed-in: power used on site saves the full tariff, and exports earn ₹3.61 a unit up to 10 kW and ₹3.37 from 11 to 150 kW. Units inside an SEZ should confirm the zone's own power arrangements first. Larger loads can add captive or open access solar beyond the roof.

The process

How installation works

1

Free site survey

Shade-free roof area measured across the day, structure checked, connection name and sanctioned load confirmed.

2

Design and itemised quotation

Sized against twelve months of consumption, with every component named.

3

Approvals filed

PM Surya Ghar and TANGEDCO net metering, plus load enhancement or phase conversion in parallel where needed.

4

Installation

One to three days for a residential system, carried out by our own team rather than subcontracted.

5

Inspection and commissioning

TANGEDCO inspects, the net meter goes in, the system goes live.

6

Subsidy tracked to your account

And two years of maintenance included from commissioning.

We check the name on your electricity connection at the survey, because a mismatch stops more applications than any technical issue. See what to keep ready.

Free, no obligation

What will it cost on your roof in Tambaram?

Put off by the three phase conversion?

We file it alongside your net metering application so the two run in parallel. Filed separately it adds six weeks. Filed together it adds almost nothing.

What happens after you send your details

  1. We call you within one working day, and an engineer rather than a salesperson comes to the site.
  2. The survey is free and takes under an hour. We measure shade free area across the day, check your connection name and sanctioned load, and photograph the roof.
  3. You get an itemised quotation naming every component and brand, the subsidy applied, and the net figure.
  4. No obligation at any point. If solar does not make sense for your property, we will say so.

We will call you within one working day with a figure. No site visit is needed for that; the survey only happens if you want to go ahead. Your number stays with us and is never sold.

Common questions

Solar in Tambaram, common questions

Will my Tambaram installation need a three-phase connection?

Probably, if the system is 5 kW or larger. TANGEDCO supplies three-phase above 4,000 watts of connected load, and Tambaram’s larger plots mean larger systems. The phase conversion is a separate application that must complete before commissioning, so it should be filed alongside the net metering application rather than after it.

Are elevated solar structures worth it on a Tambaram terrace?

Often yes, because plots here are large enough that the terrace is genuinely used. Raising the array up to 9 feet keeps the space walkable and shaded underneath, lets the array span above water tanks and headrooms, and improves generation because the panels run cooler with airflow beneath them. It costs more than a low mount, and we state the difference before you decide.

Do you install beyond Tambaram toward Mudichur and Vandalur?

Yes. Those areas are straightforward for installation, generally with good access and larger plots. Standard specification is adequate that far inland, without the coastal hardware required nearer the sea.

How long does installation take in Tambaram?

Six to ten weeks from survey to a live system in Tambaram. We avoid scheduling roof work through the heaviest monsoon weeks, so if you are starting in October or November expect the site dates to move rather than the approval.

Do you handle the subsidy paperwork?

Yes, we handle both and track the subsidy to your bank account. In Tambaram we also photograph the inverter and protection positions at commissioning, because siting equipment above previous flood levels is worth documenting for both the warranty and any future insurance question.

What is included after installation?

Two years of free maintenance from commissioning, covering panel cleaning, annual inspection of connections and structure, generation monitoring and warranty coordination with the manufacturer.

Our house in Mudichur flooded in 2023. Where should the inverter go?

Upstairs or on the terrace, above the 2023 water level. We put the inverter and the distribution box in a shaded, ventilated spot there, and any battery goes up too, because submerged batteries have to be replaced.

Is generation in Tambaram lower than in Chennai?

Very slightly. Tambaram is in Chengalpattu district, where the state calculator uses 1,580 units per kW a year against 1,600 for Chennai district. A 5 kW system makes about 7,900 units a year instead of 8,000.
