Metro construction dust until about 2028

Chennai Metro is building an underground Alwarpet station on Corridor 4, the Lighthouse to Poonamallee line. The road is narrow enough that CMRL adopted a stacked design, with platforms one above the other, and diaphragm wall work for the station was under way by October 2023. Commercial opening is slated for June 2028, still to be confirmed. Until then, homes near the works will see more construction dust settling on their roofs than the rest of Alwarpet. For a system installed in that period, we plan a shorter cleaning interval and fit a tap and a drain point on the terrace so rinsing is quick. Generation monitoring will show when dust is costing you output. Rinse early in the morning with tank water and a soft brush, never with detergent.

Older apartment blocks heading for redevelopment

Many Alwarpet apartment blocks were themselves built on subdivided estates, and some are now reaching redevelopment. Mylapore Times reported in March 2025 that residents of Janani Flats, off TTK Road, had vacated in early 2024 for a redevelopment that was still under negotiation. If your association is in redevelopment talks, settle that first. A common area system claims ₹18,000 per kW against a specific roof and connection, and it needs years on that roof to repay itself. If redevelopment is unlikely for a decade or more, go ahead. If a builder is likely within a few years, it is usually better to write solar into the new building's plans instead. Ask the builder whether rooftop solar is part of the new design.

Big bungalows and the 10 kW line

Surviving independent houses here often run several air conditioners, and some charge an EV. At Chennai's yield of about 1,600 units per kW a year, a 10 kW system makes about 16,000 units a year. That is the practical ceiling for a home: above 10 kW you lose the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, need CEIG approval and need a separate generation meter. Anything above 4 kW also needs three-phase supply. If your bill points to more than 10 kW, it is usually better to cut the load first, for example by replacing old air conditioners, than to cross that line. At about ₹0.32 a unit, the network charge on 16,000 units is roughly ₹5,100 a year, which is most of what remains on the bill.
