Living beside the Okkiyam Madavu

The Pallikaranai marsh sits at about 5 metres above sea level and once drained about 250 square kilometres through two outlets: the Okkiyam Madavu at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and the Kovalam creek. Thirty-one water bodies release their surplus into it in the monsoon. When the marsh is full and the outlet is slow, the low ground around it is the last to drain. In apartment blocks near the marsh edge, do not put inverters in a ground-floor electrical room or the basement parking. Place them on the terrace or at lift machine room level, keep distribution boards above the plinth flood mark, and run risers in sealed conduit.

Kannagi Nagar and the resettlement blocks

Kannagi Nagar is part of Thoraipakkam, and fishing families displaced by the 2004 tsunami were relocated there. More than 43,000 state-built resettlement tenements now stand in Kannagi Nagar, Ezhil Nagar and Perumbakkam, much of it on former marsh land. Individual flat owners cannot install on a shared terrace. The practical route is a collective system on the common services, such as pumps, corridor and street lighting, sized to daytime use and claiming the common-area subsidy of ₹18,000 per kW. Because these blocks are state-built, the housing board's consent is part of the process, so a clear load and savings note helps the residents' request move.

Salt air from the ECR side

Thoraipakkam borders Neelankarai and Palavakkam, which sit on the East Coast Road beside the sea, so salt-laden air reaches it alongside the marsh humidity. That combination attacks steel faster than either alone. Specify modules certified to IEC 61701 for salt mist, a hot dip galvanised or aluminium structure, and stainless steel fasteners, and check the coating thickness on the structure drawing rather than taking the word galvanised on trust. A yearly look at fasteners and clamps catches corrosion while it is still cosmetic.

A quick sizing check

Using the Chennai district yield of 1,600 units per kW a year, a 3 kW home system makes about 4,800 units a year, roughly 800 per two-month billing cycle. It costs about ₹2,10,000 before subsidy and about ₹1,10,000 after the central ₹78,000 and the ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up. A 4 kW system makes about 6,400 units a year. Single-phase supply stops at 4 kW, so anything bigger needs three-phase, and because homes pay no fixed charge, what remains on the bill is mainly the network charge of about ₹0.32 a unit.
